Honey in the Rock
I learned a new song in church on Easter Sunday. Besides being delightfully harmonic, “Honey in the Rock” tied a beautiful bow atop God’s most recent gift to me: My ability to recognize His extraordinary provision AND My ever-faltering self-reliance amidst loneliness, illness, isolation and pain; pain both emotional and physical. The lyrics express a deep sentiment that’s been growing in my heart over the last month, flourishing to the point I’d wanted to burst because it’s so true! Fortunately, Brooke Ligertwood, Brandon Lake and Daniel Wong wrote it down for me.
Ch. 1 - There’s honey in the rock, water in the stone, manna on the ground, no matter where I go, I don’t need to worry now that I know…EVERYTHING I need You’ve got! Ch. 2 - There’s honey in the rock, purpose in Your plan, power in the blood, healing in Your hands, started flowing when You said ‘it is done’…EVERYTHING You did’s enough.
And that’s only two choruses! Check out the acoustic version of this amazing tune by following the YouTube link above.
In the meantime, let’s take a closer look at lyrics that paint a clear and creative portrait of what’s in store for God’s redeemed; each phrase an example of God’s goodness and mercy in places we don’t expect to find it.
How could the sweetness of honey be found in a rock? God can do it! He told the children of Israel that if they would follow Me, walking in My paths, I would satisfy [them] with honey from the rock (Psalm 81:13b+16b).
How does a stone produce water? When God turns that stone into a fountain, duh. God said via Moses You will provide enough water from the rock to satisfy the whole community and their livestock (Numbers 20:8c).
Where and how does a flaky substance, white like coriander seed and tasting like honey wafers, end up on the ground during the dew of the night? Easy. God can make it rain manna. Moses told the Israelites in Deuteronomy 8:16 that God fed you with manna in the wilderness, a food unknown to your ancestors. He did this to humble you and test you for your own good.
When things are rough, how can we know there’s a plan? Romans 8:26 says it perfectly: And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.
Spiritually speaking, how is there power in blood? Well, since God is so rich in kindness and grace...he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son. Because of this we have been made right in His sight (Romans 5:9 part + Ephesians 1:7 part).
Can God heal you? His son Jesus IS the Great Physician according to Mark 2:17. He came to cure the sick and poor in spirit AND to heal our souls AND restore our relationship with God (Jesus: The Great Physician Immanuel tours, 03/20/20, accessed 04/02/24, {www.immanuel-tours.com}).
For all this plus the fact that ‘I don’t need to worry now that know…EVERYTHING I need God’s got,’ I say and believe with the prophet Jeremiah Heal me, Lord, and I will be healed; save me, and I will be saved, for You are my praise (Jeremiah 17:14).
PS - I referenced the above lyrics as ‘sentiments flourishing in my heart.’ The fact is, while this is true, the real truth is that these “sentiments” are all hard-core realities found in God’s Word for those who seek after Him. Remember, IF you seek Him you WILL find Him IF you seek Him with all your heart (Jeremiah 29:13)
