Idols
1 John 5:21 says "Dear children, keep yourselves from idols." Another translation puts it this way: "...don't let anything take the place of God in your hearts." Are you able to identify the things in your life that take the place of God; that sit on the throne of your life instead of God? Here are 4 questions to ask yourself if you're not sure (...from McLean Bible Church, July 11th, 2010):
- What do I depend on for security and comfort?
- How do I define myself to others? Do I define myself in relation to God or stuff?
- What causes me to be angry with God?
- What do I want so bad that I'm willing to disobey God in order to keep or acquire it?
If you're willing to honestly answer the above questions, you'll find your idols; you'll find the things that "take the place of God in your heart." And once you've identified these "things," then you can begin to dethrone them and get God back to His rightful place - on the throne of your life.
