Spiritual Tassels
What distracts your heart from spiritual things? In my life, things having to do with the body typically draw my focus away: Food, drink, clothes, makeup, etc. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with any of these things but, for me, I need to keep track of their prominence in my mind lest I become self-focused rather than Christ-focused. How about you? Are you able to identify your biggest distraction and then pinpoint when/where it draws you away from spiritual things?
Listen to how Jehovah God advises the children of Israel with regards to their distractions: The Lord said to Moses, “Speak to the people of Israel, and tell them to make tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and to put a cord of blue on the tassel of each corner. And it shall be a tassel for you to look at and remember all the commandments of the Lord, to do them, not to follow after your own heart and your own eyes, which you are inclined to whore after.” (Numbers 15: 37-40).
“…whore after?” In other words, there are things - individual preferences in each of our lives - that seduce us into behaviors or attitudes that, although not often wrong, pull us away from Christ and cause us to focus primarily on ourselves.
So, what could be your remembrance tassel? Maybe it’s a sticky note on your bathroom mirror or a strategically placed notecard in your car? Whatever you decide, get it “sewn into the fabric of your life” so that, moving forward, you’ll be good for God’s Kingdom, not just good for yourself.
