Are you spiritually sloppy?
Are you spiritually sloppy (a phrase from a recent sermon at my church)? Consider the following scenarios:
- When it comes to getting up and 'spending time with the Lord,' 4 times out of 5 you hit the snooze button and opt for more sleep...
- You have ceased to be convicted over the raunchiness of your favorite TV show believing your indulgence in this area will not affect your heart...
- You spend more time enjoying and expanding your hobby than you do genuinely serving others...
- You always find the time to check Facebook but can't find the time to get your Bible study material completed...
- You've allowed an unholy habit to go unchecked believing God "understands" you're just "weak" in that area...
- When contemplating your Bible study or small group, you want to attend but you're just too busy these days...
- You feel that "talking to the Lord throughout the day" is an appropriate substitute for committed prayer and Bible reading...
Do a few of the above situations describe you? If so, why not open your Bible today and ask the Lord to speak to you with regards to your particular area of sloppiness. If you do, you'll find verses like:
- 1 Corinthians 9:27 - I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should.
- 1 Peter 1:13, 15-16 - So think clearly and exercise self-control...you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn't know any better then. But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy. For the Scriptures say, “You must be holy because I am holy.”
- Psalm 101: 2-6 - I will be careful to live a blameless life— I will lead a life of integrity in my own home. I will refuse to look at anything vile and vulgar. I will reject perverse ideas and stay away from every evil. I will not tolerate people who slander their neighbors. I will not endure conceit and pride. I will search for faithful people to be my companions.
- Philippians 4:8 - Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.
- 1 Chronicles 28:10; 22:13 - So take this seriously. The LORD has chosen you to build a Temple as his sanctuary. Be strong, and do the work. For you will be successful if you carefully obey the decrees and regulations that the LORD gave to Israel through Moses. Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid or lose heart!
I could print countless verses that speak to the issue of spiritual sloppiness. The question is: Are you willing to face your untidy areas and seek to clean them up? Please say "yes;" you won't be sorry you did.
