"Graves of Craving"

The book of Numbers, chapter 11, documents a pretty sad story in the life of the children of Israel.  Verse 4 tells us the Israelites began to crave the good things they'd left behind in Egypt saying "Oh, for some meat."  And although the Lord brought quail for them to eat, they still complained saying "surely we were better off in Egypt!" Better off in Egypt!?  Weren't they slaves in Egypt?  Hadn't God just rescued them from Egypt and then drowned their pursuers in the Red Sea?

Oh how easy it is to long for something in a previous period of our lives even if that period of time was not a good one.  Often we'll crave a feeling or sensation that was satisfied during that time even if that feeling or sensation was not honoring to God.

When these feelings come, we need to fight them off with gratitude for our present situation because desiring them only brings disaster.  Listen to how the story from Numbers 11 ends.  Verse 34 says "...that place was called Kibroth-hattaavah - the graves of craving - because they buried the people there who had craved the meat from Egypt."

Don't get stuck day-dreaming about the past.  Look to the future and what God has in store for you.
