Name that Tune
A friend and I frequently play "name that tune" with hymns from our childhood. I email her a phrase to a hymn and she emails back the title. Let's play. "...tossed about [I have] many a conflict; many a doubt." Name that tune. If you don't know it, here's another clue:
"...[Jesus will] welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve." Still not sure? How about this clue:
"...to Thee whose blood can cleanse each spot." Any idea? Well, whether you know the actual title to the hymn or not is irrelevant. What's important is the depth of the words. But before I give you the title, let's analyze these three phrases.
Phrase #1: Our lives are full of conflict and doubt that cause us to toss and turn and remain distressed. But, phrase #2 reminds us that Jesus is available to welcome us even as sinners; pardon our shameful deeds; cleanse us from the dirt that occupies our minds and relieve our guilt no matter how grievous. In response, phrase #3 tells us to go to the only One whose blood can remove even the deepest sin-stain of our lives.
Which phrase best describes where you are right now? Whether you're in conflict over your present state of mind or you're aware of your need for Christ's help or you're asking Jesus to cleanse you from your sin - comply. Like the hymn concludes, say "O Lamb of God, I come! I come! I comply right now and I come to you for cleansing, for forgiveness and for relief. I come...just as I am."
My childhood hymnal, page #198, holds the other five verses of this precious hymn "Just as I Am." Come to Jesus...just as you are...and let Him clean you up today.
