Overcoming spiritual dullness

How's your heart mid-way through this summer?  Mine's kind of dull.  I'm still getting up each morning to read my Bible and pray yet something's missing.  Maybe it's the subtle yet consistent distraction of my phone (and other technology).  Maybe it's that nothing particularly distressing is going on in my home right now so I'm not feeling very desperate (lack of desperation is a proven cause of prayerlessness).  Maybe it's pure indifference (as I sit and stare mindlessly at the landscaping on my deck). Just in case you're experiencing some similar malaise, consider the following recipe for renewal:

  1. Confess sin.  Sin is ALWAYS the culprit for spiritual lackluster (look closely, you'll find it).
  2. Preach the gospel to yourself.  I am a huge, huge sinner and yet I have this huge, huge Savior that loves me completely and wants to use my life in an amazing way.
  3. Implement holy habits.  With the Holy Spirit's direction and help, create (or revive) godly patterns that will keep you "on track" spiritually.
  4. Surround yourself with healthy spiritual influences (books, music, friends, etc).

Blessings to you, my dear readers, as you enjoy the summer AND enjoy Christ.
