Zip your lip
In trying to help me teach my children about the significance of words, especially unkind, unnecessary words, my mom taught them this little song (complete with motions): "Shut my mouth, button my lip, lock it up tight, give a zip, before I let, one word slip, shut my mouth, button my lip." Such valuable advice not just for children but for all of us. Imagine the relief in our lives if we consistently "zipped our lips?"
- the holiday dinner could be enjoyed...
- the 3 hour car ride wouldn't feel like 5...
- the 'do it yourself' home project wouldn't cause you to take up drinkin'...
- the tumultuous 'teen years' wouldn't send you to divorce court.
Psalm 39:1a says it well: "I will watch what I do and not sin in what I say." Perhaps, though, the most recognizable advice on this topic comes from the 1942 Disney animated film Bambi: "If you can't say something nice, don't say nothin' at all."
