Nothing negative

This past summer, while vacationing in Florida, my husband and I made a pact with each other:  NO saying anything negative for an entire day.  This included (I came to realize):

  • no assessing someone's beach attire
  • no lamenting having to 'wait to be seated' for brunch
  • no criticizing the cab driver's driving
  • no belly-aching about the position of the lawn chair
  • no bemoaning the afternoon thunderstorm
  • no observations with regards to the bellman's breath
  • no critiquing our server's etiquette
  • no expressed 'eye rolls' over someone's poolside conversation
  • and so on (and on and on and on!).

Shamefully, this task was far more difficult than I thought it would be.  Wow...as the list above suggests, nearly every situation provided an opportunity to say something negative about something...even the most minuscule thing!

But God's Word asks us to behave differently.  It says "Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them" (Ephesians 4:29).

Why not see if you can go a whole day without a single negative comment seeping from your lips?  It's hard but well worth the effort.
