Higher? Deeper?
“Don’t you wanna go deeper?” This is the question our worship leader asked our worship team over 15 years ago. I remember responding ‘YES! Yes I want to go deeper!’ Later that morning, when remembering my exhilaration, I thought ‘but don’t I already know God really well? I love him; I’m striving to serve him. What else is there?’ Well, in response to the foolishness that came out of my mouth that day, I give you Called Me Higher, a song sung at my church yesterday by "All Sons and Daughters." The words speak to the fact that we tend to get comfortable in our christian lives. We sit and wait for God to do things or we find ourselves content with our spiritual status quo. But God's called us higher; he's called us to go deeper in him. Are we willing to go wherever he leads us? Over the course of the morning I found myself asking "Am I willing to go deeper; higher?" I was shocked at my unwillingness to commit.
In an effort to solidify my commitment, I've fashioned the words of the song into the following prayer. If you'd like to watch a live recording of the song, follow the YouTube link below.
“Oh Lord, I could just sit ‘n wait for all your goodness; hope to feel your presence. Lord, I could hold on to who I am and never let you change me from the inside. And Lord, I could be safe here in your arms and never leave home; never let these walls down. But you, my precious Lord, have called me higher, you, my God, have called me deeper and I’ll go where you lead me Lord. O Lord, I will be yours for all my life so let your mercy light the path before me because you have called me higher; you have called me deeper so I’ll go wherever you lead me Lord. Amen.”
