Is God's image stamped on your heart?
Oh how I love the great hymns of our faith (which is such a cliché but I really mean it!). Their words touch me in such a deep down way that my heart is often carried away in their comfort and strength. Seriously. I woke just this morning with these words rolling through my brain:
Oh, to be like Thee, Oh, to be like Thee. Precious Redeemer, pure as Thou art.
Come, in Thy sweetness; come, in Thy fullness; stamp Thine own image deep on my heart.
I laid in my bed for a good 3-5 minutes begging the Lord for my heart to mean these words; to actually know the reality of God's fullness, his glory, his mercy toward me. I asked him to have it become such a reality that it would actually feel tattooed onto my heart.
Where are you in terms of these words? I'm not asking if you feel warm and fuzzy toward the words. I realize everyone has their own spiritual pathway to God. I'm asking if, when you read the above lyrics, do they represent a desire in you? Your answer to this question dictates the focus of your prayers.
If you're indifferent to the significance of the lyrics, there could be sin in your life that's causing a blockage in the power found in these words. Pray Psalm 139 daily until God shows you the problem. "Search me oh God and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is anything in me that offends you and lead me in your life, everlasting." If he points out something that offends him and his holy character, confess it wholeheartedly and pray for the courage to flee from its destructive presence in your life.
If, after praying Psalm 139 no specific sin is revealed, you may just need to preach the gospel to yourself a little more diligently. Reading 2 Corinthians 5:21 in the "Good News Bible" might help: "Christ was without sin, but for our sake God made him share our sin in order that in union with him we might share the righteousness of God." When you grasp the depth of the reality of this scripture, you cannot help but say "Oh, to be like Thee, Oh, to be like Thee, precious Redeemer, pure as Thou art. Come, in Thy sweetness; come, in Thy fullness; stamp Thine own image deep on my heart.
