Real Freedom

What’s the definition of freedom?  No limits?  Being able to do whatever you want?  Really?  Is that really freedom?  Don’t we impose limits on ourselves all the time so that a greater liberty will be produced?  For example, doesn't an athlete forfeit free time in order to produce greater sports performance?  Doesn't a parent provide a consequence for the child that willfully runs into the street so that “freedom” to play outside becomes a reality?  Doesn't a person on a weight loss program limit their sugar intake so that better health will occur? Yes, we know these things are true.  But the Bible explains there’s more to be gained than a “greater good.”  The Bible says that adherence to biblical principles produces life!  Three times in Ezekiel chapter twenty, the Lord highlights this principle to his prophet.  He told Ezekiel in verse 11 “…I gave them (the Israelite's) my decrees and regulations so they could find life by keeping them.”  In verse 13 he says “They wouldn't obey even though obedience would have given them life.”  And in verse 21 God says “They (their children) rebelled against me too.  They refused to keep my decrees and follow my regulations even though obedience would have given them life.”

Do you get it?  IF we obey God – follow his commands and respect his principles – we get life; all-satisfying, all-rewarding and all-sufficient LIFE!  Life that trusts God and rests in the knowledge that obedience brings blessing, peace, love and joy.

So, strive to be like David in Psalm 119:45:  “I will walk about in freedom for I have devoted myself to your commandments.”
